In Birmania nel 1945, alla fi ne della guerra, un ufficiale giapponese, fedele al proprio codice d’onore militare, preferisce far sterminare il proprio reparto pur di non arrendersi ai vincitori. Il fatto è raccontato dall’unico sopravvissuto, Mizushima, che ha deciso di farsi prete buddista e vaga nella giungla birmana in compagnia di un' arpa e un pappagallo per iniziare una lunga e pietosa opera di inumazione delle salme insepolte dei Caduti.
