The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was set up to develop a new fifth generation all-weather multirole fighter capable of constituting a viable replacement for current ground strike aircraft in the United States and NATO countries. Also used by the Marine Corps, it is characterized by the adoption of the Pratt & Whitney engine with afterburner and downward swivel exhaust nozzle.
