In the course of the war, the need to produce anti-aircraft self-propelled capable of protecting troops, in the open field or in motion, against low-altitude air strikes. On the hull of the medium tank Panzer IV was built the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind with a 20mm Flak 38 quadrinato plant. At the end of 1944, Wirbelwind was joined by the most powerful Ostwind that mounted a 37mm Flak 43 anti-aircraft piece. With a larger shooting range, the anti-aircraft armament, protected by a thick and characteristic shield mounted on an "open sky" hexagonal turret, could also be used effectively against ground targets to support troops in the field. The few copies produced were assigned to the contract departments of the Panzer Division and demonstrated good operational effectiveness.
