The first specimens of the new two-seater low-wing trainer of Macchi were delivered in 1961 which immediately proved to be an excellent aircraft for flight performance and operational characteristics. Easily recognizable for the two air intakes at the roots of the wings, it was equipped with the English jet engine Bristol Siddeley Viper. The MB-326 was intended for the advanced jet training program of the Italian Air Force and played this important role for many years before being replaced by the most modern MB-339. It also achieved a good commercial success and was sold in more than 10 countries, becoming one of the most popular aircraft produced by the Italian aviation industry in the world. It could also be armed with two 12.7 mm machine guns and, in its sub-wing pylons, could carry an offensive load consisting of rockets and bombs.
