E Per Con Di Viole

Following its album Dolcissimo sospiro (Divox CDX-70202-6), which won a Midem Classical Award for the best recording of Early Music in 2007, the Accademia Strumentale Italiana under Alberto Rasi presents another collection of rarely - heard jewels on the Divox label: "" e per Concerto di Viole"" unites original compositions and arrangements for consort of viols, i.e. four viole da gamba, from the 16th and 17th centuries. The breadth of composers ranges from Antonio de Cabeçon (1510-1566) via Giovanni Maria Trabaci (1575-1647) and Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) to Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667) and François Roberday (1624-1680). The CD also contains as ""bonus track"": a chorale by Johann Sebastian Bach, Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, BWV 731, which may fall outside the early baroque timeframe, but seems too intriguing to be withheld from the listener. This selection of some of the composers featured on this CD is testament to the popularity of the consort of viols and its geographic prominence throughout Southern and Central Europe during the early baroque era. Because of its similarity with four- part ensembles of human voices, the ""concerto di viole"" enjoyed immense popularity, both among professional musicians and aristocratic amateur musicians, who wielded significant influence on the production and printing of musical works during this period. These short works reflect the entire range of human emotions. The interweaving of homogeneous voices or, in the cases of the viols, musical instruments of the same family, was ideally suited to the performance of polyphonic works, increasing the sensual and seductive aspects of the music. There fore, many composers wrote for this four - part instrumentation or re a rranged their older works.
