"The film adaptation of Irwin Shaw's best-selling 1970 novel, The Poor and the Rich became an incredibly successful miniseries that won four Emmys and had the second highest ratings of 1976.
The series, which premiered in 1976, portrays the life of the immigrant family Jordache. It focuses on the relationship between two strong-willed brothers Rudy (Peter Strauss) and Tom (Nick Nolte) as their lives take different paths, leading one to great wealth and power while the other falls on the precipice of ruin. They are both driven by ambition, greed, rebellion, love and lust as they meet an array of diverse and memorable characters along the way.
The poor and the rika is set against historical backdrops such as the McCarthy era, the Korean War, student uprisings and the Black Revolution while dealing with sensitive subjects such as infidelity and alcoholism. The series was groundbreaking in its kind and has a given place in television history."
