When the ship wrecks on the coast of Whitby in 1913, visiting her friend Lucy Seward (Kate Nelligan), young Mina Van Helsing (Jan Francis) finds the only survivor, Count Dracula (Frank Langella), lying on the beach. Lucy, her fiance, lawyer Jonathan Harker (Trevor Eve), and her father, Dr. Jack Seward (Donald Pleasence), who runs the local mental hospital, try to make the Count feel welcome in England. Dracula soon takes Mina's life and next begins courting Lucy, aiming to make her his primary bride. Shortly after Mina's death, the Sewards invite her father, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (Laurence Olivier), to their home. As Lucy falls deeper and deeper under Dracula's spell, Van Helsing realizes almost immediately that his daughter has fallen prey to a vampire and finds out that the culprit is the count himself. Van Helsing, Jack Seward and Harker go together to stop Dracula's plans to take Lucy to his home in Transylvania.
