Londra, fine '800, gli illusionisti sono considerati delle vere e proprie star. Tra questi, due amici, Robert Angier, affascinante e sofisticato, capace di intrattenere il pubblico come nessun altro, e Alfred Borden, un purista della professione, un vero e proprio genio capace di creare i trucchi più spettacolari ma non altrettanto in grado di far apprezzare al pubblico le proprie idee.
