A film of distinctly two different halves this Vietnam story is an amazing film from director Stanley Kubrick. The first half is a brutal dehumanising experience designed to reflect the lives of the raw recruits as they go through their basic training at the hands of the over the top Sergeant Hartman, played by real life soldier R. Lee Ermey. He breaks them all down then sets about building them back up as mean killing machines. The story centres on Private Joker (Mathew Modine) who is just trying to get through the war. After the brutal events of the training the recruits move out to the action in Vietnam, where things are unlike anything they have ever seen before. The whole film was shot in England as Kubrick refused to fly and insisted on re-creating Vietnam in the London docklands. This is a powerful film that has amazing performances especially from Ermey as the sergeant who seems to take pride in finding new and ingenious ways to insult and torment his trainees.
