OK, so how many Brazilian composers could you name? Villa-Lobos? For many the list begins and ends there. But according to this CD's booklet writer, Brazil "can probably boast more piano music over the past three centuries than virtually any other nation in the world". Forget about the printed hyperbole, however, and just concentrate on the music. Arnaldo Cohen has put together a masterfully varied programme and even though most of the 31 tracks last less than three minutes, it never feels bitty. He seduces the ear right from the word go, with Cláudio Santoro's rollicking Paulistana No.4. Highlights are invidious, but don't miss out on the forlorn seediness of Valsa de Esquina No.1 from Francisco Mignone, the delightful excerpts from Octavio Pinto's Cenas Infantis suite (written to amuse his children), Francisca Gonzaga's Gaúcho, the Schumannesque Coeur blessé from Alexandre Levy or the utterly infectious Odeon from Ernesto Nazareth, a figure described by Villa-Lobos as "the true incarnation of the Brazilian soul". Cohen is an ideal advocate for this music, combining effortless virtuosity with an innate musicality that traverses the centuries with ease. As the recording is also unobtrusively good, there's absolutely no reason not to add this to your shelves.--Harriet Smith.
