Wojciech Has directs this Polish historical drama. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, in the Aragonese town of Saragossa, a French officer finds a book belonging to his grandfather, who was a captain in the Walloon Guard, and after the town is captured a fascinated Spanish officer translates the manuscript for him. The story follows young Spanish captain Alfonse van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski) as he travels to Madrid through the haunted Sierra Morena mountains. But his voyage is no simple task as he encounters ghosts, gypsies, inquisitors, princesses and cabalists along the journey.
