Kayak, a pioneering progressive rock band from the Netherlands, was formed in 1972 by keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman. Renowned for their melodic blend of symphonic rock, classical influences, and memorable lyrics, Kayak's music showcased intricate compositions and emotive storytelling. Their early albums, including See See the Sun (1973) and Royal Bed Bouncer (1975), cemented their reputation in the European prog-rock scene.Throughout the decades, Kayak underwent various lineup changes but maintained a strong creative output. Hits like "Ruthless Queen" (1979) brought international mainstream success, while the band continued to explore ambitious concepts in albums like Merlin (1981). 'Ruthless Queen' placed number 4 in the Dutch charts and received status of gold record, and the album, 'Phantom of the Night' placed number 1 and was awarded an Edison Award and a platinum record for over 100,000 copies sold in the Netherlands. Despite a hiatus in the 1980s, Kayak returned in the late '90s, launching a prolific second chapter.In 2022, Kayak embarked on their Farewell Tour, a grand celebration of their storied legacy, culminating in the release of the live album Back to Shore The 2022 Farewell Tour, which captures the band's enduring spirit and connection with fans. Even though the band has retired from touring, their music continues to inspire new generations of progressive rock enthusiasts.
