Händels Dixit Dominus HWV 232 (1707) gehört sicherlich zu den beeindruckendsten Kompositionen seines mehrjährigen Italienaufenthalts. Mit dem äußerst wirkungsvollen Stück wollte der erst 22-jährige ganz offensichtlich sein ganzes kompositorisches Können unter Beweis stellen. Il Gardellino und Bart Van Reyn stellen ihm auf ihrer Einspielung die atemberaubende Kantate Il Pianto di Maria zur Seite, die lange Händel zugeschrieben wurde, bis aktuelle Forschungen ergaben, dass sie aus der Feder des italienischen Komponisten Giovanni Battista Ferrandini (1710-1791) stammt.
