Wanneer in 1953 de televisie nog in de kinderschoenen staat, trekt het nieuwsanker van de zender CBS ten strijde. Het is de tijd van senator Joseph McCarthy en diens heksenjacht op vermeende communisten in de VS. Gesteund door zijn producer Fred Friendly en tegen alle waarschuwingen van de directie en de sponsors in, klaagt Edward R. Murrow de praktijken van de invloedrijke senator aan. Die reageert voor de ogen van de VS in de ether door ook Murrow van communistische sympathieën te beschuldigen…
