Bebel Gilberto's magical voice and her soulful blend of Brazilian and electronic music took the world by surprise with the release of Tanto Tempo in 2000. Bebel was born to a family of illustrious musicians. Her late father was the bossa nova co-inventor Joao Gilberto, her mother is singer Miucha and her uncle is Chico Buarque. Originally she didn't have any intention of following in her parent's footsteps but having moved to New York, she started developing her own unique style by collaborating with artists as varied as David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, Towa Tei (Deee Lite) and Thievery Corporation. In 1999, when Bebel was ready to record her debut album, she joined the Crammed Discs' fledgling Ziriguiboom sub-label which was dedicated to Brazilian music. Bebel joined forces with another new Ziriguiboom artist, the late So Paulo-based Serbian musician/producer Suba, with whom she proceeded to record the "Tanto Tempo" album, which went on to become one of the most globally successful albums of Brazilian music ever. Der jüngste Ausbund der Bossa-Nova-Welle ist in Besitz der ältesten Rechte. Und wenn Bebel Gilberto ihr Debüt "Tanto Tempo" (So viel Zeit) tauft, so bringt das mit etwas Ironie auch ihre eigene Karriere auf den Punkt. Eineinhalb Jahrzehnte gingen ins Land, bis dieses Album realisiert werden konnte. Dabei ist die Tochter des legendären João Gilberto, der Ende der 50er den "neuen Beat" erfand, geradezu prädestiniert für diese Musik.

Kleiner Rückblick: 1995 tauchte sie erstmals auf der Compilation Global Brasilians auf, im Jahr darauf war sie auf dem Benefizsampler Red Hot & Rio vertreten. Und kürzlich eröffnete der Remix von "Sem Contenção" den Sampler Brasil 2Mil. Das Original davon gibt's nun auf Tanto Tempo.

Raffinement und Coolness, Wehmut und Reflexion -- kurz: alles, was die Bossa Nova-Klassiker auszeichnet, vereint diese Produktion. Allerdings in transformierter, gleichsam digitalisierter Form. Ihr dezidiert modernes Outfit verdankt die Sängerin DJ Suba, der 1999 tragischerweise bei einem Brand in seinem Homestudio ums Leben kam. "Lonely", einzige Einspielung, die ohne den Klangkünstler aus São Paulo entstand, wurde von Bebel zu seinem Gedenken komponiert und bringt Bahias Percussionpapst Carlinhos Brown und die Mixmeister von der Thievery Coorperation unter einen Hut.

Das Bossa-Nova-Kind weiß mit Papas Erbe in künstlerisch eigenverantwortlicher Weise umzugehen. Beherzt schlägt es die Brücke zur Jetztzeit, ohne die Musik ihrer Seele zu berauben. Vielmehr haucht Bebel Gilberto dem Genre neues Leben ein. Dabei bleibt alles so authentisch wie möglich und nötig. Ein gelungener Spagat. Willkommen im Bossa-Nova-Club 2000. --Wolfgang Zwack
