César Franck (1822-1890) gehört zu den prominenten Jubilaren 2022. Die Orchestermusik spielte im Schaffen Francks während seiner gesamten Karriere über eine zentrale Rolle, wobei er z.B. mit Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne 1846 den Prototyp der Symphonische Dichtung beisteuerte. Das belgische Label FUGA LIBERA ehrt seinen großen Landsmann mit der ersten wirklich vollständigen Gesamteinspielung der Orchesterwerke, die Aufnahmen der letzten Jahre sowie einige Neuproduktionen vereint und mit prominenten Interpreten (u.a. Cédric Tiberghien, Francois-Xavier Roth) punktet.



Orchestral music played a key role in the output of César Franck throughout his career. He accorded an important and innovative place to the symphonic poem, a new genre of the Romantic era: Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne actually dates from 1846, two years before Franz Liszt’s composition of the same name! As a virtuoso pianist himself, Franck also produced a number of concertante works, from early pieces written for his own performance – a few brilliant sets of variations and a youthful concerto – to the famous Symphonic Variations (1885). The Symphony in D minor of 1887 was one of the cornerstones of the renewal of the genre in France, coming between Saint-Saëns’s Third Symphony (1886) and Chausson’s Symphony (1899). The Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège presents here the first genuinely complete survey of this orchestral and concertante repertory, assembling recordings from recent years and some new productions.

Diese zum 200. Geburtstag von César Franck herausgegebene Box vereint alte wie neue Aufnahmen, die allesamt mit dem Königlichen Orchester von Lüttich gemacht wurden. Beginnen wir bei den Negativa, um positiv aufhören zu können. So findet sich in dieser Sammlung eine höchst uneinheitliche Version der Symphonie d-Moll. Christian Arming versucht, das Werk in eine Art geheimnisvolle deutsche Romantik mit Brucknerschen Anklängen einzuordnen, und ignoriert dabei die französische Sensibilität. Arming dirigiert auch eine sehr fade Version von ‘Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne’, einem kleineren Werk des Komponisten, ebenso wie das allegorische Ballett aus Hulda, dem es zu keinem Zeitpunkt gelingt, abzuheben. In die Kategorie der Langweiler gehört auch das von Pierre Bleuse dirigierte Prélude, choral et fugue (in der Orchestration von Gabriel Pierné). Das fast 50 Minuten lange Chorwerk Psyché ist laut Wilhelm Mohr ein « Hymnus auf die himmlische, erbarmende Liebe, ein Erlösungs-Seelendrama. » Gergely Madaras dirigiert die ausdrucksstarke Musik mit viel Feingefühl und dem nötigen Atem, um die großen Steigerung ohne Bombast darzustellen. Von dem Morceau symphonique aus Rédemption gibt es zwei Aufnahmen, die von Gergely Madaras spannnungsvoll und flüssig dirigierte erste Fassung und die zweite, in der Hervé Niquet viel Energie ins Spiel bringt. Das Orchester aus Lüttich antwortet auch gut auf sein Dirigat. Sehr vital und farbig sind auch die Interpretation von Les Eolides und – sehr effektvoll – Le Chasseur Maudit unter François-Xavier Roth. Die symphonische Dichtung Les Djinns ist, wiederum unter Roth, in einer virtuosen Darbietung, zu hören. Cédric Tiberghien stellt sein ganzes Können in den Dienst dieses kontrastreichen und brillanten Stücks, das Roth gründlich entstaubt. Den beiden gelingt auch eine kraftvolle Interpretation der Symphonischen Variationen. Neu sind die von Pierre Bleuse dirigierten und von Florian Noack exzellent gespielten Aufnahmen von Variations brillantes sur un thème original, Variations brillantes sur la ronde favorite de Gustave III de Daniel-François-Esprit Auber und des Deuxième Grand Concerto en si mineur op. 11. --Pizzicato
