DESCRIPTION
Pirates Love Poverty. Farewell. And again and again: the sea. On her fifth album, Etta Scollo draws images on the retina with sounds. Images from Sicily, the home of the singer. And the home of Rosa Balistrieri, the great Italian folk singer. Because it's her songs that Etta Scollo has rediscovered - sung stories that tell a whole life. Canta Rò! means translated: Sing Pink! It was the parole of her friend, Poet Ignazio Buttitta, and neighbours on streets and markets in rural Sicily of the 60s. Later, it became the request of artists such as Dario Fo, who couldn't get enough of Rosa Balistreri's voice and their songs. Folk songs of their homeland, centuries-old partly, with Greek or Arabic roots, singed in Sicilian mouth species that sounds so much more strange than Italian. And her own songs by Anphabeet Rosa Balistreri, in which she tells about her longing from suppression and anger, but also of sensuality and life joke. Etta Scollo was fourteen when she heard Rosa Balistreri singing for the first time: She was in bed with fever and received a cassette. Since then she has no longer released the rough voice of the Balistreri. In the summer of 2004, a long cherished dream became reality: together with the "Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana", she sang the songs of Balistreri in her homeland. The album Canta Rò collects cuts of the three live concerts. "Without revealing the spirit with which Balistreri sang her balades, Etta Scollo created its own very personal interpretation style", judged an Italian journalist for the concerts. Together with musicians from Germany and Sicily, Etta Scollo developed orchestral arrangements for the songs that Rosa Balistreri originally accompanied only with her guitar. With her album, Etta Scollo now fulfils a wish of Rosa Balistreris: "When I die, my songs sings. You shouldn't forget them and continue to sing them for all others', she had asked them in her song "Quannu moru" (When I die).
