Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou alias George Michael hat es acht Jahre nach Older nun doch noch geschafft, endlich wieder ein vollwertiges Studioalbum abzuliefern. Ob es wirklich sein letztes sein wird, wie der Künstler bekannt gegeben hat, bleibt abzuwarten. Sollte die Entscheidung wirklich Bestand haben, dann ist George Michael mit Patience ein würdiger Abschied gelungen, vor allem auch deshalb, weil er sich wieder ganz auf seine Stärken als Songwriter besinnt und auf jeden überflüssigen Ballast verzichtet.

Stücke wie "Amazing", die erste Single, die er zusammen mit Johnny Douglas (Koproduzent von Older) geschrieben hat, oder das im Downtempo-Bereich angesiedelte "John And Elvis Are Dead" überzeugen neben ihrem aufgeräumten Klangdesign, da ist einfach kein Platz für überflüssige Verzierungen, vor allem durch die starke Gesangsperformance von George Michael, der auch für die Produktion und die Arrangements des Albums alleine verantwortlich zeichnet.

Einen Ausfall sucht man auf dem Longplayer vergeblich. George Michael liefert mit Songs wie dem lässig groovenden "Cars And Trains" und dem mit einer betörenden Melodie veredelten "Round Here" genug schlagkräftige Argumente, warum man das Ende seiner Karriere ausgiebig bedauern sollte. Es gibt in der heutigen Musikszene einfach zu wenig Songwriter, die Stücke in der Qualität von "My Mother Had A Brother" oder "Flawless (Go To The City)" abliefern. --Norbert Schiegl
