Though Primal Scream are one of the most influential and acclaimed British bands in recent history, Dirty Hits is their first best-of. Across 18 tracks, it traces their history from the acid-tinged "Loaded" and "Come Together", through the Stonesy rock of "Rocks" and "Jailbird", to the genre-bending groove of "Kowalski" and the bombastic "Kill All Hippies".

REVIEW
For the uninitiated, Primal Scream have been the footballing equivalent of Liverpool FCover the past 15 years. They've talked the talk, walked the walk, had occasional flashes of brilliance, but always just missed out on the big prize.

But if you take all those flashes of brilliance and package them into one 18-track Dirty Hits compilation, you've got yourself a fantastic album.

While the omission of early singles "Gentle Tuesday" and "Imperial" from first album Sonic Flower Groove and "Ivy Ivy Ivy" from follow-up Primal Scream will annoy life-long fans, the commercial classics more than compensate.

Presented in chronological order, there is surely no better introduction to Primal Scream's work than the magnificent "Loaded", from the classic Screamadelica album - even if this version is edited somewhat.

So away baby let's go!

The gospel-dance of "Movin' On Up" follows while "Come Together" sounds as uplifting as it did on its 1990 release. Funky duo "Rocks" and "Jailbird" from 1994's Give Out But Don't Give Up precede the Scream's finest, and somewhat under-rated ballad, "(I'm Gonna) Cry Myself Blind".

From here, things take on a darker edge with "Burning Wheel" and "Kowalski" from 1997's Vanishing Point before the electro-funk madness that was 2000's XTRMNTR takes over with "Swastika Eyes" and "Accelerator" taking you to the edge of the abyss.

The electrified punk of "Miss Lucifer" from last year's Evil Heatand their new single brings us bang up to date."Some Velvet Morning", released on November 17th,sees the band in a calmer place and complements previous single "Autobahn 66", which provides a serene finale to this cd.

Dirty Hits, Primal Screams first compilation, really highlights how the band have progressed and changed their sound over the years. It's only when you listen to this album from start to finish that you realise that they've made great music in a whole host of different genres over the years.

If you fancy a bit of extra-time, there's a limited edition bonus remix disc. No doubt the debates will rage among aficionados as to what should and shouldn't have been included, but most of these tracks are great songs in their own right. Well worth a listen! --Jack Smith
