The woman who robbed Erykah Badu's crown as the queen of nu-classic soul does it again on her second album Experience. Like Badu, Jill Scott has released a live version of her debut work, though Scott has gone one better and produced a double CD with an extra disc full of new material as well. The concert was recorded in Washington DC but though Scott changes up the tempo of tracks such as "Love Rain and A Long Walk", giving them a needed freshness, they're still never quite as powerful as the recorded versions. However her (unlisted) cover of A Tribe Called Quest's "Find My Way" is stunning. This almost matches her performance of "You Got Me" on the Roots' Roots Come Alive album as one of the most emotional performances captured live of the last few years. There's a surprising lack of guest stars on the album. Surprising because, after the massive success of her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott, the entire R&B community must have been clamouring to work with her. However it's also refreshing to not find the same names such as Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and Ludacris going through the motions all over Experience. The new material is as sexy and slinky as her debut cuts although producer Jazzy Jeff uses some very well-known breaks (Brass Constructions Changing for example) to keep the album catchy. The album kicks off with the 4 Hero produced "Gotta Get Up" which sports a very early 90s post-acid groove feel. "Sweet Justice" boasts her exquisite mixture of pain and passion that she so deftly articulated on "I Think It's Better". "Gimme" is a sure-fire hit and the operatic, grandiose "Be Ready" is also a fitting climax to what is another marvellous album from one of modern souls true greats. --Jake Barnes.
