Is UK garage going to explode or implode? Who knows? It certainly did a lot of exploding in the late 90s and early 21st century, with chart hits and exposure galore. The Dreem Team are firmly on the expansionist side, moving their radio show from the London-based Kiss FM, to the wider-reaching Galaxy FM and now to the biggest of them all, Radio 1. This compilation continues their outward momentum and like may others takes few chances, staying on garage's more acceptable R&B smooth side exemplified by tracks like Destiny's Child's "Say My Name", the B15 projects's "Girls Like Us" and Colour Girl's "Joyrider". There's also a fair smattering of old school British soul such as Wookie's mix of Soul II Soul's "What's Goin' On" and Omar's "Nothing Like This" as well as golden oldies like Crystal Water's "Gypsy Woman" and The Gap Band's "Outstanding". The mixing is smooth, like the trio's pin-up profile, but avoids the bump and flow or "rupture", as author Tricia Rose would have it, that makes club music so exciting. The Dreem Team opt in favour of something more widely digestible. But as physics tells us every reaction has an opposite reaction and the dark side will have its revenge soon. --Jake Barnes
