Wealthy, successful photographer Paul Galesko (Dick Van Dyke) plots the slaying of his wife Frances (Antoinette Bower) by carrying out a phony kidnap scheme. Galesko cleverly frames ex-convict Alvin Deschler (Don Gordon), who becomes Galesko's second homicide victim. Columbo, disbelieving what appears to be an open-and-shut case against Deschler, pursues the investigation.
