The second in the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s renowned trio of albums for BYG/Actuel, 'Message to Our Folks' is a masterclass in improvisation that goes beyond established black music genres. Recorded in August 1969 at Studio Saravah, the album reaches out to African American audiences with its rich mix of gospel, funk, bebop, and rock influences, all radically reinterpreted by the group's freedom-loving approach.

Emerging from the late '60s collision of free jazz, radical theatre, and Black Nationalism in the US, the band found a distinctive voice after relocating to Paris. The warm reception from French audiences energized their creativity, leading to many memorable performances and this unforgettable recording.
