By the time his eleventh studio album, That's Why I'm Here, was released in 1985, James Taylor was on the verge of leaving music altogether, retiring . His marriage to Carly Simon had dissolved, he had lost two close friends, John Belushi and Dennis Wilson, to untimely deaths, and he was struggling with the cold grip of methadone and recovery from heroin addiction. Ultimately, it was live performance that rescued him. A booking to play the Rock In Rio Festival in Brazil, and the appreciation of the audience for his music, provided the validation and inspiration that Taylor needed to continue. Three years later he released Never Die Young, a solid, sober collection of songs all of which, unusually for Taylor, were solo compositions or co-writes, with no covers included on the album. The album began the next phase in Taylor s career, one in which he established himself as a first-rank, gimmick-free Adult Contemporary recording artist and became known as a compelling live act, with his annual summer tours a highlight of the music calendar. His musicianship also reached a new level and he ensured that each time he took to the stage he was backed by the finest players available. Beneath Anther Sky presents a compelling example of James Taylor during his golden years as a touring artist, and comes from the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland, on the 4th of July, 1988. In this performance at Montreux, broadcast live on FM radio, Taylor gives a virtuoso tour through the best of his work to date alongside selections from Never Die Young (Never Die Young, Sweet Potato Pie, First of May) are fine renditions of many of the standards (Country Road, Carolina in My Mind, Fire and Rain, Your Smiling Face).
