Rhythms Of Africa

In his 75 years on this earth, Nigerian drum master Babatunde Olatunji - 'Baba' to his friends and disciples - broke down many barriers and preconceptions and took the music of his continent to a wider world. We have combined three original albums in this set: 'Drums Of Passion' (1960), 'Zungo!' (1961) and 'Flaming Drums! '(1962). The title of the compilation is the translation of 'Jin-Go-Lo-Ba', a track from 'Drums Of Passion' that was covered by Carlos Santana on his group's debut album a decade later. But that's not to say Santana's patronage was crucial: 'Drums Of Passion' was released on a major label, Columbia, to which John Hammond, the man who discovered talents as diverse as Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, had signed Olatunji in 1957. We hope our reissue will bring the magic of this drum master to a new generation.
