EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Initially little more than a back-bedroom operation founded by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson, Acid Jazz opened its doors in 1987 and named itself in a jocular manner after the acid house movement that was all the rage across the UK from the mid Eighties on. Its first release was Galliano's 'Frederic Lies Still' (included here) and, while Peterson would subsequently leave to set up a similar label in Talkin' Loud, Acid Jazz set about becoming an integral part of the musical landscape as well as one of the key independent labels. While the name might have been Acid Jazz, the music was not confined to any one genre; an eclectic roster of artists covered such styles as jazz, reggae, funk, soul and even jazz poetry. The label is as vibrant and vital as it ever was, but it is worth taking a listen to some of the sounds Acid Jazz has dropped on us over the last twenty five or so years to fully appreciate just how far the one-time bedroom operation has come.
