Elsewhere: Commissions for Clarinet

This album brings together a striking collection of works written for Robert Plane, one of today’s most distinguished clarinettists. Music by Judith Bingham, Sally Beamish, Piers Hellawell and David Matthews reveals the instrument’s remarkable expressive range. Bingham’s Elsewhere takes inspiration from the hidden details of Botticelli’s paintings, transforming overlooked moments into vivid musical landscapes. Alongside it are Beamish’s inventive Tom’s Turn, Hellawell’s evocative Woodsmoke and The Rising of Sirius, Matthews’s moving tribute A Song for Barrie, and Bingham’s compelling concerto Barnaby Rudge. With the Elias String Quartet, Gould Piano Trio, James Gilchrist, Tim Horton and Rhys Herbert, Plane celebrates the imagination and enduring creative partnerships behind these exceptional commissions.
