The East Coast of England was served by the railways that came together in 1923 to form the London and North Eastern Railway, one of the greatest railway companies of all time. Renowned for its famous named trains such as the Flying Scotsman, the Silver Jubilee, and the Queen of Scots, amongst others, the L.N.E.R. built a succession of legendary Pacific steam locomotives to the designs of Sir Nigel Gresley, many of which were named after racehorses. By contrast, the L.N.E.R.s railways in East Anglia were built to serve a land that has changed little over the years, and the railways reflected this timeless appeal. In this programme we see, in images recorded over the last decade, the survivors of the L.N.E.R. era still at work on the lines for which they were built, ranging from Londons Kings Cross to Retford, and across the Fens into deepest Norfolk on the North Sea coast at Weybourne, all still evoking Steam in Britain in East Anglia and Eastern Britain.
