Ľubomir Pipkov (1904-74) war einer der führenden Vertreter der sogenannten ,zweiten Generation' der bulgarischen Komponisten. In seinem späteren Leben war er vom alten Erbe der bulgarischen Volksmusik fasziniert und schuf eine Reihe von sogenannten, ‚metrorhythmischen Studien‘: Klavierminiaturen, die melodische Unmittelbarkeit und rhythmische Komplexität mit einem Charakter verbinden, den man grob mit ‚Prokofjew trifft Bartók auf dem Balkan umschreiben könnte. In der Tat sah Pipkov in den unregelmäßigen Rhythmen des bulgarischen Volkstanzes eine Parallele zu den rhythmischen Experimenten zeitgenössischer Komponisten wie Debussy, Ravel und Strawinski. Diese Veröffentlichung enthält die „Suite Bulgare“ op. 2, die „Metro-rhythmical Pictures and Studies“ op. 69 & 77, die unvollendeten „Children's Joys“ op. 82 und mehrere Miniaturen.
