"The Piano Sings" präsentiert Filmmusikkompositionen, die zwischen 1993 und 2003 entstanden sind, wie z.B. Gattaca, Wonderland, The Diary of Anne Frank, The End of the Affair, The Claim, Man with a Movie Camera und natürlich Das Piano. Von der bekannteren Michael Nyman Band oder den Orchesterarrangements kommend hat Nyman die Kompositionen an den persönlichen kreativen Punkt zurückgebracht, von dem aus die Musik entstanden ist. Nyman meinte: "Seit ich am Klavier komponiere, beginnt all meine Musik als Klaviermusik. So war die Gelegenheit, die Musik zurück zu ihrer Essenz zu führen, für mich sehr verlockend und für mich entscheidend, um dieses Album zu machen." Das Album konzentriert sich ganz bewusst auf die lyrische Seite von Nymans Spiel, was auch den Titel erklärt.
