Crisis of conscience thriller set in the insurance trade. When insurance investigator Abe Holt (Forest Whitaker) investigates a suspicious death in an car accident, he begins to smell a rat. Discovering that the dead man was a conman, carried a false identity, and was insured for one million dollars, Holt starts to dig deeper. But when he meets the only beneficiary, the victim's sister Isold (Julia Stiles), who lives with her husband and son in a remote cabin, Holt's professional judgement wavers and he starts to become personally involved.
