Boesman and Lena

Danny Glover and Angela Bassett star in this extraordinary film from director John Berry, based on Athol Fugard's now classic play. Boesman and Lena are a restless, homeless couple eking out an existence in modern day South Africa. Their tumble down the social ladder, told in flashbacks from happier times, has brought them to a makeshift shelter on the mudflats where Lena, fierce and passionate, chatters endlessly - only to be taunted or ignored by Boesman. But when an old Xhosa tribesman stumbles onto their path, the cracks in their relationship widen as Lena's instinct is to protect while Boesman's is to abuse. With powerhouse performances and beautifully shot, this magnificient film is on one level a study of the anxieties of human existence, on another level a powerful indictment of social injustice. Ultimately 'Boesman and Lena' is a moving testament to human resiliance and the will to survive.
