The Third Wife

Vietnamese drama written and directed by Ash Mayfair, set in rural Vietnam during the 19th century. When 14 year-old May (Nguyen Phuoung Tra My) is married off to wealthy landowner Hung (Long Le Vu) she becomes his third wife and must learn her place within the hierarchy of her new home. As her burgeoning sexuality develops and she becomes pregnant she realises that to bear a son would bring her great status within the household. However, she also contemplates her future and the limits placed upon her in this patriarchal society.
