Für seinen neuen Film sucht Regisseur Blasetti ein kleines Mädchen. Maddalena, die ihre Tochter Maria als Filmstar gefeiert sehen möchte, bringt die unbegabte Kleine nach Cinecitta. Die Mutter ist bereit alles zu opfern - Lehrer und Friseure für die Tochter sind ihr wichtiger als die Bezahlung der Miete. Ganz zum Leidwesen ihres Ehemanns! Erst als sich Mutter und Tochter zum Gespött von Cinecitta gemacht haben, erkennt Maddalena, die Torheit ihrer Wunschvorstellungen.
