In 1761, 19-year-old Catherine (Fanning) travels to Russia to marry the country's ruler, Emperor Peter III (Hoult). Dissatisfied with married life and her lowly position, Catherine begins plotting to save Russia by assuming power in a violent coup and leading a progressive agenda as empress. In this season, it's been four months since the coup began and Catherine and Peter's forces are at a stalemate. Peter finally surrenders and agrees to transfer power to Catherine, though he has a plan to retake the country.
