Regurgitator - Jingles: The Best of Regurgitator

REVIEW
You're forgiven if you've never heard of Regurgitator, but let me assure you, they are a great band. They're absolutely huge in their native Australia. They sell out Arena shows on a regular basis and sell thousands of records. But they're relatively unknown over here in the UK and more's the pity. Their sound is varied, but essentially punky pop, (with loads of samples, a bit of indie guitar and some funk & rap thrown in for good measure). You could compare them to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pavement, even Public Enemy. But you wouldn't come close to describing their sound.

Jingles is a compilation of their work so far and is, to say the least, varied. Songs from their four full length albums and various EPs have been thrown together here at random. "Track 1", the first song on their debut 94 EP appears as the fifth track here. It's a fairly traditional rock song, the Chili Peppers being an obvious influence. Next up is "Superstraight", taken from their most recent album, Eduardo and Rodriguez Wage War on T-Wrecks, which shows how far the band have come. It's a melodic pop song complete with catchy chorus. Very unlike the traditional rock vocals heard on earlier songs such as "FSO".

A major part of Regurgitator's appeal is their hilarious lyrics. Gems include "My girl means nothing, I just bang her for fun" ("Superstraight") and "I sucked a lot of c**k to get where I am" ("I Sucked A Lot Of C**k"). The band satirise everything from political & music industry leaders to themselves. They sing about how tiresome commercial success is but realise that each song brings them more success and money.

Their rocky first album, Tu Plang, (which is Thai for 'Jukebox') was acclaimed but the band were not content to sit on their laurels. They re-invented themselves for the 80s pop-influenced follow up, Unit. They take the mickey out of fans who only like a bands early stuff "before they became too commercial" by naming Unit's first song "I like Your Old Stuff Better Than Your New Stuff" (sadly not included here). The band have constantly looked to take the non-traditional route in their music and in their career. This has enabled them to consistently produce high quality, original and frequently amusing music which has endeared them to their many antipodean fans. And the odd Englishman. --Dan Tallis
