Sänger, Bassist und Gitarrist Mitch Jones gründete mit Gitarrist Michael Tee und Schlagzeuger Simon Vidale Scattered Order 1979 in Sydney. Patrick Gibson am Synthesizer kam dazu. Mitch Jones war zudem als Livetontechniker für The Birthday Party und Pel Mel tätig. Die Band verband, gepaart mit einem Sinn für absurden Humor, Zufälle und Geräuscheffekte in losen Strukturen mit einem experimentellen Fundament aus Rock und Wave, wie man es ähnlich vielleicht von The Residents kannte, mit denen Scattered Order folgerichtig in Australien auf Tour gingen. „Career Of The Silly Thing“ erschien 1985 und gilt als das zugänglichste Werk der vergleichsweise immer noch herausfordernden Künstler. Zusätzlich zu den zwölf Tracks des Originalalbums sind hier die vier Bonustracks der „Selling The Axe To Buy The Wood“-EP (1987) enthalten.
