In un futuro non meglio specificato, quello che era un tempo il Nord America e' risorto in uno stato chiamato Panem, il cui governo tiene in scacco i suoi abitanti attraverso rigide regole. Come promemoria della punizione inferta alla popolazione per la ribellione di settanta anni prima, ogni anno viene organizzato tra i 12 Distretti che compongono lo stato, un crudele reality show, noto con il nome di Hunger Games. Ad ogni famiglia viene imposto il 'sacrificio' di un ragazzo e una ragazza tra i 12 e i 18 anni, che dovra' partecipare ad un gioco al massacro. Addestrati al combattimento e alla sopravvivenza, i concorrenti si sfideranno fino a che non emergera' un unico vincitore, il sopravvissuto.
