Il sergente Tom "Gunny" Highway, eroe della guerra di Corea odiato dai superiori per i suoi metodi bruschi e la sua inosservanza delle regole militari, deve addestrare un gruppo di marines allo sbando e difendersi dall'arroganza di un ufficiale ancora fresco d'accademia, che tuttavia non ha mai partecipato ad uno scontro armato. Gunny sottopone i suoi marines ad un duro ma motivante addestramento fino allo sbarco nell'isola di Grenada, dove si consumerà la battaglia lampo che vedrà il plotone di Gunny vincere contro le forze cubane nonostante il sergente disobbedisca ancora una volta agli ordini del maggiore.
