The game revolves around a new story that spans the entire Marvel universe and is filled with the classic adventure sense and humor of LEGO video games. Players slip into the roles of their favourite Marvel superheroes as they work together to stop a group of villains who set themselves the goal of destroying the world. Whether clearing the way, swinging over obstacles or rising into the sky, players can visit iconic locations of the Marvel universe such as Stark Tower, X-Mansion, Asteroid M, and Asgard.

Players can also unlock more than 100 playable characters from the Marvel universe, including fan favourites such as Black Widow, Loki, Spider-Man, Nick Fury, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Deadpool and Galactus!

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes for Nintendo Switch also includes the following DLC packages that have already been released:
- Includes LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Super Pack DLC: Brick-shattering action with more superheroes and super villains, new vehicles and races. Fan favourites such as Dark Phoenix, Winter Soldier, Symbiont Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Falcon and Beta Ray Bill are available.
- Includes LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Asgard Pack DLC: Chaos is caused by the vengeful Malekith and the villainous LEGO figure Courses. And Jane Foster and Sif, the shield maid of Asgard, are also playable. The universe is defended by Odin and the three warriors: Volstagg, Hogun and Fandral.
