Het vervolg op Batman Begins, The Dark Knight herenigt regisseur Christopher Nolan en Christian Bale, die opnieuw de rol van Batman/Bruce Wayne speelt, in zijn niet aflatende strijd tegen de misdaad. Met de hulp van Lt. Jim Gordon en officier van justitie Harvey Dent stelt Batman zich ten doel de georganiseerde misdaad in Gotham eens en voor altijd uit te roeien. Dit driemanschap werkt goed, maar al snel valt het drietal ten prooi aan een meesterbrein genaamd The Joker. Deze ontketent anarchie in Gotham en dwingt Batman de grens tussen held en wreker te overschrijden.
