Was he aware of his impending death? It's hard to answer this question, for Schubert's last year of life proved to be as richly musical as it was diverse. The Drei Klavierstücke D.946, for example, display an exceptional quality of writing, music that is almost pure, with no ulterior motive. Conversely, Sonata No. 21 in C minor D.958 (the first of the three final masterpieces) sweeps us away with its dramatic power and dizzying architecture. Denis Pascal masterfully continues his exploration of Schubert, virtuoso but focused, supremely respectful of the written text but with a striking poetic freedom.
