In the trenches of the Western Front, Paul Bäumer and his comrades soon have to experience the whole brutality of the war: there is no room for heroic pathos in the murderous position war.
This congenial filming of the novel by Erich Maria Remarque has been enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike, and even today every new anti-war film must be measured by the timeless quality of this work. However, the film was bitterly fought and censored, shortened, disfigured or even completely forbidden by militarists of all kinds.
