SINOSSI
Baltimora, 1962. L'adolescente Tracy Turnblad, solare e ottimista, nonostante i chili di troppo è un'ottima ballerina e sogna di poter partecipare un giorno al programma musicale della televisione locale, il Corny Collins Show. Allo show partecipano giovani ballerini bianchi, che frequentano la sua stessa scuola, tra cui Link, del quale Tracy è segretamente innamorata, e Amber, figlia della snob e competitiva Velma Von Tussle, direttrice del programma. Ai neri, ancora discriminati, è riservato il Negro Day una volta al mese, ma Tracy è a favore dell'integrazione razziale: infatti a scuola, quando viene messa in punizione, fa amicizia con un gruppo di ragazzi neri che sfruttano ballando le molte ore di punizione che ricevono.
