Texas, the 1950s. Troubled teenager Jesse Tucker (James Walters) arrives at the Benedict Home for Boys and has his world turned upside-down by hipster teacher Jack Cabe (John Travolta). Cabe introduces Jesse to the new rock 'n' roll sound and encourages him to release some of his pent-up emotion by joining a band. But when Jesse then meets Sara (Heather Graham), the daughter of the school's ultra-strict headmaster (Richard Jordan), he finds a whole new inspiration for his emotional turmoil.
