Even prior to the release of Almost Cured of Sadness, Stephen Jones was always an accidental pop star. Before he had a huge hit under the name Babybird in 1996, with a pretty but insubstantial song called "You're Gorgeous", Jones had spent much of his adult life in a bedroom studio churning out odd and roughly recorded pop vignettes for an audience barely wider than his immediate circle of friends. This is certainly what he seems happiest doing. The success of "You're Gorgeous" did not prompt any obvious attempts at writing further hits by Jones, and Almost Cured of Sadness marks Jones' complete retreat to whence he first came: a home studio.

Inevitably, perhaps, given the circumstances of its creation, the most strident motif of Almost Cured of Sadness is a certain self-indulgence. While it is always clear that Jones is having a whale of a time tinkering with the sounds and samples that make up these songs, the listener is likely to struggle to feel like they're in on the joke. Jones' innate pop sensibility at least means that nothing here is exactly a hardship to listen to--a couple of tracks, such as "Sitting in My Graveyard" and "Friend" are downright pretty, and dimly reminiscent of Grandaddy and recent Mercury Rev--but this is not a record that is going out of its way to impress anybody. --Andrew Mueller
