The Alamo

John Wayne directs and stars in this classic Western based on the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. Colonel Davy Crockett (Wayne) along with Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and William Travis (Laurence Harvey) and an army of 184 Americans, plot to defend the Alamo mission against the Mexican Santa Anna Generalissimo Antonio Miguel Lopez (Ruben Padilla). Although severely outnumbered as they face Ana's 7,000-strong army, their strong will and determination to succeed carries them through. The film won the Academy Award for Best Sound and was nominated for six others including Best Supporting Actor (Chill Wills), Best Cinematography and Best Picture.
