Comedy about the politics of small-town life starring Gene Hackman as former US President Monroe Cole, who has retired to the small town of Mooseport in rural New England to relax and write his memoirs after losing the recent election. His neighbours convince him to run for mayor of the town - and, to keep things fair, local hardware store owner Handy Harrison (Ray Romano) agrees to run against him. Everything is very amicable and good-humoured to begin with, but it isn't long before the friendly competition escalates into all-out political war - especially when Handy's girlfriend Sally (Maura Tierney) comes between the two candidates.
