After his wife is killed in a restaurant shoot-out government agent Harry Hannan (Scheider) suffers a nervous breakdown and is placed in a Connecticut sanatorium. Upon his release, he returns to New York where he learns his services are no longer required and his home has been overtaken by doctoral student Ellie Fabian (Margolin).
