The Music Andrew Knights and Philip Gates explore vivid, piquant music written for oboe, cor anglais, oboe d'amore and piano by Duparc, Gates, Kœchlin, Poulenc and Satie. Duparc songs, arranged for cor anglais and piano, are set beside Kœchlin's Au Loin, Gates' Oboe Sonata - dedicated to the memory of his late friend, the jazz pianist Matt Ross - and the Poulenc Oboe Sonata given in the 2004 revised edition. Andrew Knights and Philip Gates also play unaccompanied, the former in captivating Kœchlin monodies, the latter, Poulenc's haunting Mélancolie and Satie's Avant-dernière Pensées. Reviews 'Andrew Knights gives an affectionate reading of the Poulenc Sonata alongside other delectable French miniatures, well matched by Philip Gates' enchanting Sonata.' Julian Haylock, BBC Music Magazine (February, 2012) 'His plaintive oboe gracing music both established and new, Andrew Knights plays Poulenc's memorable Sonata and Philip Gates' well-crafted memorial to a jazz pianist. Knights' cor anglais and sweet oboe d'amore are featured in Duparc song transcriptions and evocative pieces by Charles Kœchlin. Accompanist Gates rounds off an appealing Melodist CD with solo piano items from Erik Satie.' **** Peter Palmer, Nottingham Evening Post (November 2011) 'This welcome collection is warmly and closely recorded and well documented by a composer whose natural affinity, to our benefit, rests with the singing French instrumental tradition.' Rob Barnett, MusicWeb International (December 2011) 'This is a most enjoyable disc in which Gates' cuckoo sits neatly in a Gallic nest of works. Performances and recording are excellent.' Jonathan Woolf, MusicWeb International (January 2012) Artists' Biographies Andrew Knights The oboist Andrew Knights was born in India and brought up in Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. After studying oboe, cello and conducting at the Royal College of Music in London, he won a scholarship from the French Government to study with Pierre Pierlot in Paris. A meeting with Hansjorg Schellenberger, principal oboist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, led to his being invited to apply for the Herbert von Karajan Akademie. He won a scholarship from the Karajan Foundation, spent two years in Berlin, and was frequently invited to play with the famous orchestra under von Karajan at home and abroad. After winning prizes in Britain and Prague, Andrew was appointed principal oboist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1983. In 1991 he joined the Bournemouth Sinfonietta with whom he appeared as concerto soloist on over a hundred occasions throughout the southwest of England. After the orchestra was disbanded in 1999 he has diversified greatly as a musician. He plays many concerts with the group 'Prevailing Winds'. In 2000 he became a Professor at Trinity College in addition to his role as visiting lecturer at Southampton University. Most notably he has become a distinguished practitioner in the field of music therapy, his work receiving coverage by such programmes as 'You and Yours' from Radio 4 and BBC South Today. Philip Gates Philip Gates Born in London in 1963, Philip Gates was a music scholar at Millfield whence he gained an Open Exhibition to read music at the Queen's College, Oxford. During his time there he studied privately with Phyllis Sellick. He has since pursued a career as a freelance musician, teaching, conducting, giving piano recitals and composing. He puts great importance on the tonal and melodic aspects of music, drawing inspiration from many different genres from folk music to jazz. His works include Danzas del Sud - a flute sonata written for Christopher Hyde-Smith and Jane Dodd - a clarinet sonata and several other works for solo instruments and piano. Crossing Jordan, a spiritual for brass band, was described by David Fanshawe after it's first performance in 2002 as 'original, immediately evocative and immensely effective in it's scoring'. Several of his pieces have been commercially recorded, the String Quartet in A minor by the Eberle Quartet in 1998 for the Naim Audio label and in the following year a selection of music for wind instruments and piano released by Shellwood Productions. The latter featured instrumentalists such as the alto saxophonist Roy Willox, the clarinettist Thomas Kelly and the flautists Ian Clarke and Janet Way. 2008 marked the release of 'A Garland for Gatsby'; a further CD (Melodist 3130 CD) devoted to Gates' music.
